At Endeavour Energy, we’ve been powering millions of people across New South Wales for more than 130 years. It’s in our name to endeavour and in our nature to care. Our people are at the heart of our purpose to power communities for a brighter future. Fostering a family-friendly workplace and enabling our employees to thrive both in life and at work is core to our success. By empowering our people to balance their work and family life, follow their interests and be there for life’s important moments, we support them to be at their best while growing their careers.
Our commitment to powering communities extends beyond just delivering electricity. We strive to create an inclusive, flexible and supportive environment where our employees can thrive personally and professionally. By supporting work-life balance and celebrating the important moments in our employees’ lives, we enable them to contribute their best to our shared vision of a brighter future.
We recognise that no two families are the same, and we are dedicated to providing a safe and inclusive workplace that supports our people in balancing their work and family life while maintaining a fulfilling and rewarding career. As a certified Family Inclusive Workplace™, we’re proud to be recognised as a leader in workplace inclusion and family support.
One of our standout initiatives is our updated Parental Leave Policy. In 2023, we undertook a comprehensive review of this policy to ensure it meets the evolving needs of our employees and their families. The positive changes we have made place us among Australia’s best-practice employers for family support.
Our updated Parental Leave Policy now offers up to 26 weeks of paid parental leave for eligible employees associated with the birth, adoption or long-term foster care arrangement of a child by the employee or their partner. Additionally, we provide paid superannuation on unpaid portions of parental leave, paid leave for fertility treatment and have removed the primary and secondary carer labels to better support shared care. This encourages both parents to take the opportunity to bond with their families during those special early months and years.
Our commitment to family support has not only enhanced the wellbeing and performance of our people but has also fostered a more inclusive and supportive workplace culture through leaders modelling, encouraging and normalising fathers taking parental leave. By empowering our employees to balance their family and work commitments, we enable them to thrive both personally and professionally, reinforcing our collective mission to power communities for a brighter future.
Since the implementation of our updated Parental Leave Policy, the response from our people has been overwhelmingly positive. We had a broad goal to increase the number of men taking parental leave, and we are pleased to see significant progress in this area, with our people using this leave in ways that work best for their families.
In our most recent engagement survey held in June 2023, our commitment to wellbeing and flexible working was positively reflected. An impressive 83% of employees agreed they have the flexibility needed to manage their work and caring obligations. On the wellbeing front, 81% of employees felt comfortable having open and honest conversations with their managers about their wellbeing, and 69% believed that Endeavour Energy actively looks after the wellbeing of its employees.
Since promoting our new paid parental leave policy, we’ve seen a 12% increase in men taking parental leave, from 42% in March 2023 to 54% in March 2024, with the average time taken increasing from 3.4 weeks to 10 weeks (about 2 and a half months). Additionally, there has been a notable increase in same-sex couples taking parental leave.
These results demonstrate that our people value and are utilising the support we offer. The positive response to our parental leave policy not only underscores our commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive culture but also highlights how these initiatives empower our employees to thrive both personally and professionally.
At Endeavour Energy, we understand that a family-inclusive workplace, where our people can thrive, supports improved well-being, performance and engagement. This inclusive culture allows our people to perform at their best, so we can power together to support the customers and communities we serve. It drives us to deliver the innovative and creative solutions needed to lead the way with smarter energy solutions.
Being a family-inclusive organisation helps us attract diverse talent, open new career paths for employees and increase participation by women and other marginalised employees in leadership roles. It strengthens our reputation as an inclusive employer, where we value and support our people to grow and thrive throughout their careers and lives.
Ben: I was fortunate enough to access Endeavour Energy’s Parental Leave from October 2023 – March 2024. I was able to spend quality time at home with my son Leo and also spend significant time with my two older boys Blake (11) and Alex (8). This allowed my wife Kate to return to work and meant Leo and I had quality time to bond, learn about each other, and create a connection I am forever grateful for. During my time off I kept in contact with my team and upon my return, I felt welcomed back and it has been amazing to see the development and confidence in the team during the nearly 6 months I was off. I have confidence the time off has not impacted my value or position. It has been an adjustment coming back in, but we can now elevate our thinking and it allows me, as the leader of the group, to focus on other priorities within our scope.
At Endeavour Energy, fostering a family inclusive workplace is fundamental to our mission of putting people and communities first. Achieving Family Friendly Workplace accreditation reaffirms our commitment to supporting our employees in balancing their work and family lives. We believe that when our people thrive both personally and professionally, they create a brighter future for our people, customers and communities. This accreditation underscores our dedication to creating an environment where everyone feels valued, supported and empowered to succeed at home and at work.
